This grand old country manor house had lain empty for over 30 years when Yorkshire man Michael Massarella came across it on a house hunting trip to Le Marche in 1999. ‘It was as if someone had walked out of the door and left everything exactly as it was, from the beds, to the clothes in the wardrobe and even two cars in the garage’. And so followed 15 years of hard labour, albeit a labour of love, to restore the house to it’s former glory.

Built by wealthy farmers, the house is less than a century and a half old, but has played it’s part in history. During the second world war the residents stowed allied soldiers in a secret hide away in the roof, before they were secreted out of the country. Their names remain carved into the beams to this day.

The house overlooks three hectares of olive trees which Michael has developed and proudly produced Villa Carmine’s first olive oil in 2013.

The six bedrooms with modern bathrooms en suite or one between two are available for single and double occupancy with a family room in the loft. Sleep and repose are important ingredients for any retreat, with this in mind, Michael sourced the most comfortable beds he could find. The bedrooms have views of the gardens and idyllic Le Marche countryside.

The house offers space and comfort to visitors, with a large living room in which to curl up with a book, take a dip in Villa Carmine’s pool or just relax on the patio and take in the view.

Over the years, I have wanted a wider audience to take pleasure in Villa Carmine and the surrounding countryside and lifestyle. Together with my friend and neighbour Isabella, we have welcomed guests to stay at Villa Carmine with either a B&B or holiday let option.

Not content with standing still, we have continued to develop Villa Carmine and after a chance reunion with an old friend Gráinne, a fitness and Pilates instructor, the three of us decided to take Villa Carmine to it’s next stage by offering it as a place of retreat.

Our aim is to ensure that our offering is not just that of an activity holiday, but one where our guests can dictate their own pace, where there is no pressure, only an offer of enjoyment and a feeling of well-being.

“I always wanted this house to be a place where family and friends could come and immerse themselves in the gentle rural life of Italy, where the simple and sometimes forgotten pleasures of life can be enjoyed.”
